The department of higher education is contemplating to introduce biometric systems at all the top colleges in the state to monitor attendance of teaching and non-teaching staff, according to RV Deshpande, minister for higher education and tourism.

Speaking at a book release, Deshpande said the introduction of biometric systems at colleges would help lecturers be more regular, and consequently improve the quality of education students receive, as well.

The minister said the Rural Service Agency and National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (Nabard) action plan began to make up the infrastructure deficiency seen in all government colleges.

“The infrastructure deficiency is being met partly by obtaining funds under the Nabard scheme in several colleges and polytechnics. The government will provide Rs 121 crore for constructing classrooms, laboratories and toilets in 152 colleges,” Deshpande said. Further, he said the admission to diploma courses was conducted online for the first time in the country.

“It will help students avoid wasting time by visiting three to four educational institutions. They can specify their choice of educational institution by using the online facility,’’ he said.

To bring forth global leaders in business, industry and trade, the state government is collaborating with the Global Shapers of the World Economic Forum to train 10,000 students from universities and colleges under the open source leaders programme.

“About 5,000 engineering students from VTU along with 5,000 undergraduate and postgraduate students will be trained by the collegiate education department,’’ he said.
