The Archaeological Survey of India’s Karnataka branch is set to write a letter to the deputy commissioner, Bangalore Urban District on the discovery of a cannon believed to belong to Tipu Sultan, according to T Arun Raj, superintendent archaeologist.

The cannon was unearthed while excavation work was in progress for the construction of a multi-purpose building on the premises of Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute campus near Tipu Sultan’s Summer Palace.  The 11-feet and seven-inch cannon was believed to belong to the Tipu Sultan era.

Speaking to iamin, Raj said that the location where the cannon was found does not fall under the jurisdiction of Archaeological Survey of India. “Though both our sites, Tippu Sultan’s Palace and Fort are near the location where the cannon was found, it does not fall under our jurisdiction. I am writing a letter to the deputy commissioner of Bangalore Urban District in this regard,’’ he said. He also added that his department staff was ready to wash the cannon with fresh water since it is covered with mud. “We need the permission of Bangalore Urban District administration to wash the cannon with chemicals to ascertain its history,’’ he said. Two similar cannons belonging to Tipu Sultan’s era were unearthed during Namma Metro work in November 2012.

The construction of the multi-storied building is taken up at an estimated cost of  Rs 11,400 lakh by the Karnataka Medical Education Department. It will have a lecture theatre block, quarters for nurses, senior residents and non-teaching staff and hostels for boys and girls. The construction of the building commences on January 8, 2015 and is expected to be completed by January 7, 2017.
