The ripples of the resounding performance of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in its political debut in Delhi are being felt on the state with political aspirants knocking the doors of the party units in coastal districts.

With the AAP opening up the candidate search on their website on Monday last, downloading of applications has been quite encouraging, according to the party members.

The grapevine has it that while AAP was enigmatic at this point of time, former officials known for their integrity, social workers and academicians had approached the AAP for admission, including former director of the Mangalore international airport MR Vasudeva and some notables in trade and commerce.

“We are not looking for politicians here but people who can be true servants of the country with a singular objective of giving good governance and corruption free administration” according to the party leader Srinivasan Nandagopal.

He agreed that the recent entry of Anil Shastry (grandson of Lal Bahadur Shastry) and S Balakrishnan, former chief financial officer of Infosys into the AAP has given the fledgling party a considerable boost.

The AAP was exhibiting a certain degree of confidence about its prospects in coastal Karnataka, which is the most educated district in the state.

It is hoping to supplant the Congress and BJP in the district, particularly since the two major parties have failed to contain communal overtones, the attacks on women, youth and moral policing, while the left parties were not expected to be a major threat on any count.

The moral police “raids” have continued unabated even after the Congress government was installed in the state.

The AAP holds the existing political system in the state responsible for attacks on youth.

“We are concentrating on the micro issues with macro approach in each Lok Sabha constituencies, for example we are looking at several issues that threaten public life in the coast including the diversion of Nethravati river from West to East, and the political forces that were at work behind the scenes,” said Dharmendra convener of the Dakshina Kannada unit of the AAP.
