Suspended Pulikeshinagar police station inspector, Mohammed Rafiq, was arrested and questioned for more than two hours by the investigating officer on Friday in connection with the gang rape of a 22-year-old in a moving car. Later, he was released on station bail.

Rafiq was suspended for his alleged dereliction of duty in handling the case. Following the suspension, the police had also booked a criminal case against the cop under section 166A of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) on Thursday.

In connection with the case, Rafiq was arrested on Friday morning and assistant commissioner of police (ACP) of Halasur sub division, Manjunath, who is the investigating officer (IO) in the case, questioned him for more than two hours.

"The inspector said that he had committed a mistake in handling the case, but he was not aware of the amendments made to the IPC section in connection with rape cases after the Nirbhaya incident in Delhi. Also, he said that there was no delay on his part in investigating the case. Soon after the complaint was filed on Sunday, he reportedly asked the victim to undergo a medical test, but she left saying that she would come the next day, due to which he did not register a rape case on the day the crime took place," a source said.

The inspector has been directed to appear before the IO whenever he is summoned.Four suspects let off In a fresh development, the victim has not identified the four men who were detained by the police based on the information given by Nasser Hyder, the main accused in the incident, after which they were released by the police.

"Hyder had said that Mohammed Ali alias Shaikh Ali, Wasin Khan, Imtiyaz and Atheek were involved in the case after which the four were detained and brought to the police station. They were interrogated, but we were not very convinced about their involvement. Their mobile phone signals too, traced to some other locations when the crime took place. More importantly, the victim was also called to identify them but she told us that these four men were not present when the incident took place. Based on these points, the men were let free," the police explained.

The police are still on the lookout for the other accused in the case and are grilling Hyder in this connection. Sources say that Hyder had dragged the names of these four men, due to personal issues. Further investigations are on.
