Friday was a hot day in Haveri. But the blazing sun could not dampen the spirits of Congressmen gathered to hear Congress vice-president. Rahul spoke; his voice blared out of the loudspeaker, making Congress workers ecstatic. But before he arrived and spoke, there was loud music and chaos, which made students seethe with anger, as they were writing their exams closeby.

Rahul’s address to public in Haveri played havoc with students’ minds, as it was unfolding at the same time when students of the Government First Grade College were writing an exam at the Municipal College in Haveri on Friday.

Students, appearing for BCom and BSc exams, had a tough time in concentrating on their papers as Congressmen indulged in some loud campaigning, which was peppered with a mix of light music and patriotic songs.

As the Government College has no building of its own, it runs classes and examinations on the municipal college campus.

The examinations were scheduled from 9am to 12noon and yet the program was
scheduled for 10.30am.

Rahul, who had made the crowd wait for about three hours during his visits to Sindhanur, Ilkal and Bijapur on last Tuesday, repeated the same by arriving at 12.20pm. The crowd, waiting for two hours in the heat, were kept in good humour by an orchestra.

A girl student had this to say about the day’s high-profile event. “It’s our fate. Neither district administration nor politicians are bothered about us. Even police are useless. Who is there to listen to us?” she said.

Organisers said they were not aware of the examinations. Haveri deputy commissioner, V Anbukumar, told dna that he was not aware about the exams. “Municipal college ground is only ground available in Haveri. However, I will instruct the returning officer concerned to not repeat such mistakes in the future,” he added.
