Good news for Bangaloreans who are waiting for the arrival of their favourite mangoes. The Department of Horticulture and Karnataka State Mango Development and Marketing Corporation have planned to organize a month-long mango and jackfruit mela in the city.
The mango and jack fruit mela will be inaugurated by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah at Lal Bagh on May 29 at 11 am.
Speaking with iamin, M Kamalakshi Rajanna, chairperson, Karnataka State Mango Development and Marketing Corporation said, “We have made all arrangements for the benefit of mango farmers at Lal Bagh. We are providing around 80 outlets for the farmers free of cost.’’
The mango and jack fruit outlets will be kept open from 8 am to 7 pm. “We have taken measures to provide carbide-free mangoes. They will be supplied to the consumers in bio-degradable bags. We have also constituted a committee to fix the price of mangoes depending upon their variety and size,’’ Rajanna said.
The mango mela is expected to offer different varieties of mangoes such as Alfonso, Badami, Banganapalli, Rasapuri, Mallika, Sendura, Malagova, Tothapuri, Neelam, Amrapali and Kesar to consumers. “Around 800 tonnes of mangoes were sold during the mango mela last year. We are not expecting to sell the same this year, since we are not expecting the supply of mangoes to be on par with last year’s. This year the mango crop was damaged due to drought and then sudden rains,’’ she said.
