Sri Ranganatha temple in Srirangapatna is playing host to a 24-hour veena marathon — a unique attempt that is a part of the Ranga Mudi Utsava. The marathon recital will begin at 5 30am on April 21 and conclude the following morning.

“The concert is an attempt to promote Carnatic music among youth and persuade them to develop interest in classical music,” says Vidwan Prashanth Iyengar who will be leading this marathon. Iyengar will be accompanied by other veena exponents like Ravishankar Sharma, KS Krishnaprasad and DV Prasanna Kumar. If all goes according to plan, the concert could make it to the Limca book of Records.

Iyengar has been working towards revolutionising  Indian classical music — bound by plenty of rules and theories — to make it more accessible. As a part of his efforts to simplify the complex nature of classical music without distorting its structure, Iyengar has introduced music appreciation courses in his music school, Sree Rama Centre of Performing Arts, which has succeeded in catching the attention of many youngsters, including IT professionals.

Music, according to Iyengar, is a symbol of culture. And India, he says, has gained considerable recognition because of its musical  heritage. For Iyengar, this 24-hour veena marathon is a means to prove to the world the heights that classical music can go provided it gets adequate encouragement. Iyengar is of the view that the Indian classical genre lacks sponsors, a major impediment for its exponents.

“Nevertheless, they still strive to promote their music,” he says. This concert, thanks to its record-breaking attempt and unique format, has generated excitement and managed to bring a new twist to the Ranga Mudi Utsava celebrations.

Smita Joseph, a representative of the Limca Book of Records, will be present at the venue to document the entire marathon. Music lovers in Bangalore , too, have a treat in store as Iyengar and his team plan to recreate the 24-hour magic during the Krishna Janmashtami celebrations at the ISCKON temple.
