Twenty-one lakh children in the state are underweight and suffer from mild malnutrition and 12 lakh children of 0-6 years age group are under weight due to malnutrition, the state government informed the high court quoting a report on Thursday.

This was in response to a public interest litigation filed by BL Patil who alleged that Raichur distrcit was suffering from extreme malnutrition.

The state government said lack of food, social and cultural aspects like gender discrimination, early marriage, repeated pregnancies, superstition, lack of information regarding maternal and child care practices were some of the reasons for malnutrition found in children.

A committee constituted by the government to address child malnutrition and infant mortality in the state has come out with about 110 recommendations under 12 broad categories: Some of them are: Weigh all children in the age group of 0-6 years and complete the process in six months; identify and weigh all lactating mothers a month after delivery; conduct documented health check-ups for all underweight children; anganawadis should provide freshly cooked meals to children to ensure that those under the age of six receive food every day and 100% coverage is attained; monitor and strengthen integrated child development programme; ensure Anthodaya Yojana and ration card for those below poverty level category; improve infrastructure of primary health centres and supply potable water.

The division bench headed by Chief Justice Vikramajit Sen and Justice BV Nagarathna suggested that the government should take help from medical and law students to ensure that these recommendations are properly implemented.
