An altercation between bar employees and customers took an untoward turn at Mahalakshmi Layout on Tuesday night when a cashier was shot at by a customer, who later also allegedly fired at the police when they gave the accused a chase.
Deputy commissioner of police (North) SN Sidramappa said the clash took place at Dhanalakshmi bar in Saraswathi Nagar about 10.45 pm on Tuesday. The altercation between some customers and bar employees was over the quality of food.
Anjan Kumar and his friend Ravi got into a heated argument with the bar employees. Bar cashier Neelaiah intervened to placate them, but himself got embroiled. In the heat of the moment, Ravi pulled out a pistol and fired at the cashier. Neelaiah suffered a bullet injury on his left thigh and collapsed on the ground.
The police reached the spot on being intimated about the shootout. The policemen spotted them on Laggere Main Road in JC Nagar in the early hours of Wednesday. Since the policemen were aware that the accused were carrying at least one firearm, they ordered the two to surrender.
This time too Ravi brought out his pistol and fired thrice at the policemen. One bullet missed Sriramapuram police inspector Sampath Kumar by a whisker, the other two hit the police vehicle. The two inspectors fired back in self-defence, felling both the accused. One bullet hit Anjan’s leg, two others hit Ravi’s legs.
The police took the two accused to KC General Hospital for treatment.
Sidramappa said both the accused are out of danger, and attempt to murder cases have been registered against them for both incidents. Cashier Neelaiah was admitted to Sanjeevini Hospital, where he was said to be out of danger.
Friends and relatives of Anjan and Ravi have alleged that the police shot them in a fake encounter.
