Recent counts reveal that the number of voters in Bangalore urban district has increased by 10lakh  after the first summary revision of electoral rolls, which, by the way, is still on. Addressing media persons here on Wednesday, BBMP commissioner and District Election Officer, Siddaiah advised citizens above 18 years age to enroll themselves as voters by submitting Form 6 before April 7. “I appeal to all those people eligible to vote to enroll themselves as voters. I want all the eligible voters to exercise their franchise during the polling for the State Assembly elections to be held on May 5,” said Siddaiah.

Stating that all arrangements have been made to receive the applications for enrollment of names in the voters’ list, Siddaiah has said that every effort would be made to dispatch the electoral photo identity cards (EPICs) to those who enrolled their names on time. “We have made arrangements to issue voter identification slips at the doorsteps of the voters. They can produce slips as ID proof. These slips will be issued to those whose names are included in the voters’ list. As of now, 55,000 applications are pending for scrutiny and we expect more before the deadline (April 7),” said Siddaiah.

He also added that 7,500 polling booths are necessary for conducting the elections in 28 assembly segments in Bangalore Urban District. “So far we have collected the data of 35,000 employees who we plan to depute for election duty. We have also identified 4,000 polling stations as sensitive and hyper-sensitive and efforts would be made to ensure fair and free polling at these booths,’’ he said.

The BBMP Commissioner has said that a proposal on holding elections for the Mayor and Deputy Mayor posts has been sent to the State Election Commission. The tenure of the present Mayor and Deputy Mayor will come to an end on April 26. “We are waiting for the reply from the authorities concerned to hold the election for these posts,” said Siddaiah.
