The ongoing political crisis in BJP has affected flood relief works in North Karnataka. As many of the party's leaders are enjoying a good time in resorts, law and parliamentary minister S Suresh Kumar tells DNA that the political turmoil is affecting the party's image and whoever wins the tussle, the losers will be party workers who strived hard to bring BJP to power.
What made you to write letter to ministers, MLAs and MLCs?
When the BJP government came to power in the state, people had many aspirations. As leaders, it was a great opportunity for us to prove our mettle. But many of them seem to have forgotten their roles and are now after individual goals. So they are ignoring the party'scollective goal which is the well-being of the people. Hence, I wrote the letter to all the BJP ministers, MLAs and MLCs.
What is your comment on the crisis your party is going through?
It is very unfortunate. Nobody ever thought that the issue could snowball to this extent. All I can say is it is the right time for introspection for all of us. Such factionalism will happen to any political party. We cannot sit idle now. We have to look into various aspects like what went wrong, where the problem started, and how it developed. We have to find answers for questions like whether the grievances of a section of party workers were genuine as it is being projected or were they done by design to achieve certain personal ambitions. We have to look into all these aspects and formulate collective measures to resolve the crisis.
So many MLAs are enjoying in resorts. Your comments.
It is the moral responsibility of these MLAs staying afar in star hotels to look into the development works going on in their respective constituencies. They have a moral responsibility to look into people's problems. When people are suffering in North Karnataka, they should be with them leading flood relief works. When thousands of people are suffering there, they can't enjoy life at resorts.
Are lawmakers accountable to the public?
All of them are accountable to the people in words and deeds. They have legislative duties to perform in the interest of state. They have to safeguard the interests of the people. There is a demand from public to give them the right to recall MLAs who do not measure up to their expectations. If such powers are given to them, lawmakers will have to change their attitude and behave as responsible public servants.
Will the crisis dent BJP's image?
Yes, such factionalism will bring bad image to the party at the end of the day. BJP is a cadre-based party. If there is a revolt in the party and it is given wide coverage in media, it will demoralise party workers. Whoever wins the tussle, the losers will be party workers who strove hard to bring it to power.
