Congress workers led by a legislator painted some of the potholes dotting the Mahakavi Kuvempu Road yellow to protest against the BMRCL’s negligence to repair the stretch after metro work. Commuting has become a hell on this stretch as passengers are slammed and bumped nonstop because of crater-like potholes dotting it.
“Hundreds of people fall on these roads thanks to these massive potholes. Does the government, the BBMP or the BMRCL care for people?” Narendra Babu, MLA of Mahalakshmi Layout constituency, asked.
Although most of the Metro work along the stretch has been completed and the barricades removed, steps have not been taken to repair the road which faces traffic jams, Babu said.
“After the protests by residents, the BMRCL says they will improve the roads. But they have been saying this for the past one year. Why did they allow the road to get to its present condition in the first place?” he asked.
Initially, the BBMP and BMRCL were blaming each other for the poor condition of the road. Then they were saying that the state government had to give permission for repairs, he said.
Three days back, the state government gave them the green signal for repair works.
Recently, the BMRCL issued a statement saying that the repair work on the West of Chord Road (Modi Road to Soap Factory) and Mahakavi Kuvempu Road (Navrang Circle to Malleswaram) would be finished in three to four months.
The cost of the work will be shared by the BBMP and the BMRCL. The Karnataka Road Infrastructure Development Corporation has already been engaged in the work, it said, adding that preliminary works such as cleaning had already begun along the stretch.
This is not the first protest over the poor condition of the road. A few months ago, freedom fighter HS Doreswamy, along with the residents of Malleswaram and Rajajinagar, had staged a protest.
