After bagging the first ESI Medical College in the country, the state may soon have a second one at Gulbarga. This was disclosed here on Tuesday by Union minister for labour and employment, Mallikarjuna Kharge.
At the inauguration of the Jayadeva Institute of Cardio Vascular Sciences and Research at the ESIC Model hospital at Rajajinagar on Tuesday, the minister said, "This hospital is based on a new model of public and public partnership between central government and state run organisations. It is also a happy occasion as a new college for medicine has been started here. If an MoU can be signed soon, another such college can be started in Gulbarga."
The minister said the centre was planning to start 20 such model colleges in the country. He said, "Five colleges are going to be started next year at Chennai, Maharashtra, Hyderabad, Himachal Pradesh and Kolkata and all of them are in various stages."
Within next year Karnataka will have three more ESI hospitals. "We will be spending over `100 crore on building a 100-bed hospital in Doddaballapura. Another ESI hospital will soon be coming up at Bommasandra. A diagnostic centre will be built at Nanjangud near Mysore," Kharge said.
The new unit at ESIC Model hospital has been built with a total cost of ` 25 crore with both ESI and Jayadeva sharing it. "ESI has provided 3,000 square feet of built up space with all utilities, while Jayadeva Institute has put up all equipment such as cardiac cathlab, heart lung machine, echo, operation theatre. About 10 specialists from Jayadeva institute such as cardiologists, cardiothoracic surgeons, anaesthetists and paramedical staff will run the centre," said Dr CN Manjunath, director, Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences and Research.
