Automotive lobby group Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) on Monday said the huge disruption the Indian automotive market is going through has limited the number of new launches  which could have discouraged participation in the Auto Expo 2018 to be held next month.

He said the companies which are have not participated or pulled back from the event on February 9-14 have done it due to their own problems and not entirely because of rising costs.

However, at the same time the SIAM said that they have 48 members in their group, and half are participating in the biennial event this year.

The last event saw over 6 lakh people visiting the show, including thousands from other countries. This year about over 100 products including 24 new launches, are slated at the expo.

Reacting to the reports about many companies not participating or pulling out of the event, Sugato Sen, deputy director general, SIAM, said, the lobby group has not increased the rental charges for the event since 2012 in order to keep costs low for the companies, but other charges are not in their control.

He said even the workers who come to build the stalls for the foreign companies at the event venue stay in five star hotels, and hundreds of people trying to make their hotel bookings near the venue jacks up the rates. He that it sought the help of administration in keeping it under checks, but has failed.

Hotel industry insiders claim that the hotels around the event venue in Greater Noida near Delhi has gone up due to the heavy bookings and is expected to climb further as it nears the event date.

Aloke Bajpai, CEO and co-founder, ixigo, a travel portal, said the hotel tariffs have spiked 17% compared to same period last year while air fares have also increased 5-7%, which may be attributed to the rush for the auto expo.

SIAM said it is difficult to come up at an average cost of participation and its corresponding returns for each company. However, it is estimated the companies spend Rs 10-40 crore for publicity, stage set-up, endorsement, lighting, space rent, etc.
