Sales of Maruti Suzuki India's (MSI) Vitara Brezza have crossed three the lakh-milestone in 28 months since the vehicle was launched in March 2016, with the top variants contributing to over half of the compact SUV's total volumes.

S Kalsi, senior executive director (marketing and sales), Maruti Suzuki, said in a regulatory filing that the contribution of the top variants in the total sales of Vitara Brezza has zoomed to 56%. According to the company executives, Vitara Brezza has been a breakthrough product for MSI as it created disruption in the SUV market, which is the fastest growing segment at present in the country.

According to industry analysts, Vitara Brezza's closest competitor Ford EcoSport has seen monthly sales hovering at around 5,000 units in the past few months. Tata Motors's Nexon has seen average monthly sales of around 4,500. In comparison, Vitara Brezza has been clocking over 10,500 units a month. "With its sporty and glamourous traits, Vitara Brezza continues to be the most loved SUV despite several new entrants into the segment," Kalsi added.

An executive at one of the Mumbai-based sales outlets of MSI said that Vitara Brezza is still generating tremendous demand from the car buyers. "The demand for Brezza had slowed a bit earlier when Tata Nexon was launched. However, it picked up again after it (MSI) made some changes in it with advance features."

Meanwhile, the company's premium hatchback Baleno recently crossed over four lakh units of sales in the country in a period of less than three years. Baleno was launched in October 2015 and has since been a consistent player in the top-10 seller list.

In another recent development, MSI stopped the production of diesel version of its premium hatchback Ignis due to low demand. The company, which launched the model in January last year, has sold over 72,000 units so far. The auto maker registered average monthly sales of over 4,500 units of Ignis during the January-May 2018 period.

Baleno and Ignis are sold through Maruti Suzuki Nexa, a premium channel of MSI. As per the statistics available with Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), April and January of last financial year, Maruti Suzuki Nexa sales outlets, initiated by the company in July 2015, have emerged as the third-largest selling retail network in the local passenger vehicle market. Maruti Suzuki India has the largest presence and rival Hyundai Motors India's network is the second-largest.

MSI on Monday had reported a 36.3% increase in total sales at 144,981 units in June as against 106,394 units in the year-ago month. The auto major further said sales of compact segment cars comprising Swift, Estilo, Dzire and Baleno jumped 76.7% to 71,570 units last month as against 40,496 units in the June last year. For utility vehicles including Ertiga, S-Cross and compact SUV Vitara Brezza sales rose 39.2% to 19,321 units in June as compared to 13,879 units in the year-ago period.
