Volkswagen Group's Made-In-India Vento car has become the third-largest selling car in Mexico, making up the bulk of car exports by Volkswagen to the country at 210,000 units.

The Vento, built at VW's Pune plant, replaced the Jetta Classico in the Mexican market. The company started exporting Vento to Mexico in 2013.

Industry reports reveal that Volkswagen India has exported the maximum number of cars from India during the first three months of the current financial year, racing ahead of Maruti Suzuki and Nissan. While Maruti Suzuki recorded a marginal growth of 0.26% over the year ago period, Nissan saw its exports decline 30% during the same period. According to experts, cheap labour and other related costs is one of the prime reasons due to which the vehicle manufacturers prefer to make India as its export base and thereby making their operations in the country viable.

Andreas Lauermann, president & managing director, Volkswagen India, said, "We continue to invest in this opportunity and look forward to more successes from India in the years to come."

Till date the company has exported 250,000 India-made cars to Mexico which includes locally-made left-hand drive Polo and Vento cars. Volkswagen India exports to over 35 countries across four continents of North America, South America, Africa and Asia and has shipped more than 310,000 cars to these geographies till date. The export volumes to Mexico contribute more than half to the total production at the VW's Pune plant.

The Pune plant has so far attracted an investment of over €825 million (? 5,720 crore). The plant has achieved a localisation level of approximately 82% (without engines and transmissions). With a workforce of 4,000 employees, it is operating three shifts since March 2016.

Meanwhile, the possibility of partnership between Volkswagen and home grown Tata Motors is believed to have come to a dead end as the German car maker which has been looking avenues to share the platform with other local players to cut the cost is reportedly now toying with the idea of developing its own platform in India.
