A little bit of sporting success is always cheering news. And when it’s news as big as Indian golfer Arjun Atwal picking up the Wyndham Championship, then it makes the success all the sweeter.

Indians have been part of the pro golf circuit for some time now and have had some success as well, but this is the first time an Indian has won a prestigious tournament on the US PGA tour.

Kolkata-born Atwal, who now lives in Florida,
however, had to battle more than just the prowess of his fellow golfers and the rigour of the tour. Three years ago he was involved in a car crash which led to a death and it took a year for Atwal’s name to be cleared.

He also missed months on the tour due to his injuries. So he had to battle his way back into the circuit and is, therefore, only the second player ever to win a US PGA event having come through as a qualifier.

Comparisons are odious, we all know. But at a time when Indian cricket seems to going through one of its rollercoaster moments and looks decidedly under-par, Atwal’s victory reminds us how the best of sport lies in the competing. When talent and hard work shine through then victory is never far behind
