MJ’s influence
This is with reference to ‘Farewell, MJ’ (DNA, July 8). The attendanceat the public memorial service of Michael Jackson is by itself a vindication that MJ was a music legend who set new standards in the music world. He was undoubtedly loved by millions and he was also the man who popularised the ‘MoonWalk’. The thriller may be over but Jackson’s enduring influence the masses is a lesson for all the performers.

A promising budget
Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee deserves to be complimented for presenting a creative, forward-looking and growth-oriented budget. His proposals reflect the UPA government’s anxiety to maintain growth momentum. With sizable allocations to social, agricultural, infrastructural, educational and health sectors, the budget will give a clear push to the country’s economy and spur employment generation (‘Pranab pampers UPA’s pet projects’, DNA, July 7). The salaried citizens have something to cheer about as the FM has enhanced their tax exemption limits. The FM however should have lowered the corporate tax, even if marginally, as this would have strengthened the will of the corporate world to perform better. Nonetheless, after considering colossal revenue and fiscal deficits coupled with continuing price rise of essential commodities, the cumulative effect of the budget is bound to be inflationary.

Fool-proof EVMs?
This is with reference to RM Deshpande’s letter, ‘Sore losers’ (DNA, July 7). When doubts are raised about the Electronic Voting Machine’s (EVM) tamper-proof ability by responsible leaders like LK Advani, it deserves a better response than calling him a sore loser. Let the EVMs be tested to prove that they cannot be tampered with in the presence of the representatives of all the political parties and information technology experts. Till then the old ballot papers should be used.

A great competitor
It is undoubtedly a great achievement by Roger Federer to have broken Pete Sampras’ record. He deserves the accolades and laurels that are being showered upon him. But I am surprised that not a single column has been dedicated to Andy Roddick, who gave stiff competition to Federer. Roddick made a terrific comeback from anonymity after about a year of relentless efforts. He has drastically transformed himself to a more flexible sportsman and he gave a commendable performance. He will surely prove to be a great competitor in the forthcoming tournaments.
