Bangalore edit: A moral dead end?

What the state assembly witnessed on Tuesday evening was the irony of ironies. The day saw a heated debate over rave parties by foreigners at Malpe Beach and how much skin was being exposed, not to mention several questionable acts by people hailing from very different cultures. Discussions swayed to what effect rave parties have on the youth.

In the middle of it all (literally), we have our minister for co-operation, Lakshman Savadi, crossing all boundaries, sitting among the rows of people’s representatives and watching a video of a rape being committed by four men.

As if this wasn’t enough, when it was caught live by a TV channel, the minister’s defence took the cake. He made it sound as if he was conducting a research project — that the video he was watching on his mobile was nothing short of some reference material to strengthen arguments he might have had (did he have one?) on the topic of adverse effects of rave parties on the youth.

Talking of effect on the youth, it is more likely that watching a minister engrossed seeing a pornographic video while in the middle of an assembly session could set an example to students to emulate during their classes!

Forget violating the sanctity of the House (mobile phones should not be used when the assembly is in session); this minister has redefined ‘mischief’ by watching pornography on his mobile phone. What a lesson for the children of this state, this country! And to think that the one giving Savadi company was no less than minister for women and child development CC Patil!

Now, where does that leave our fears of rave parties affecting our glorious Indian culture? It’s time we put our thoughts together and place our fingers on what threatens our culture more — ministers who we have elected watching porn while at work and sending wrong signals to the youth; or rave parties?
