In a celebrity-driven culture, it is but natural that the wedding ceremony of actors Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh is the talk of the town.
The nosy, news-hungry world was deliberately kept out of the occasion that had only 40 people in attendance. A starry affair can be private, though stars can ill-afford privacy since their personal lives are fodder for public consumption.
Though the paparazzi culture in India is nowhere close to what is witnessed in the US and Europe, our insatiable quest for the minutest detail of film actors, especially the heroes and heroines of Bollywood, beats logic. But the passion for movies and the stardom associated with it cannot be measured on the scale of everyday life.
Films are a projection of our aspirations; they have to be larger-than-life, an exaggerated version of conflicts and emotions to fit the narrative on a big screen. For all those dreaming about a fairytale wedding, Deepika and Ranveer tied the knot in a way that two families agreed upon.
It was a blend of tradition and modernity that all big fat Indian weddings adhere to. Wednesday witnessed a Konkani affair, and Thursday will see Sindhi rituals. Like Anushka Sharma and Virat Kohli, this couple too chose privacy over everything else.
An intimate affair, there were no photographs for the press. After all, despite all the glitz and glamour surrounding it, Deepika and Ranveer wanted their special day to be truly special and not be marred by intrusion of any kind.
However, that hasn’t stopped the hyperactive media from speculating endlessly. In fact, they had torn through the impregnable wall of security to ferret out juicy nuggets such as how the mehendi ceremony went, who wore what outfit and what songs were belted out. Well, the serious news of the day took a backseat on Wednesday.
