DNA Edit: Creating opportunities – The Railways can train guards to be motormen
Motormen

The Railways’ idea of replacing guards with motormen on the suburban EMU hasn’t gone down well with the National Mazdoor Union, which fears that its members might become redundant in the new scheme of things. But at the same time, it’s a dire necessity, especially in Mumbai, to increase the average speed of the trains and accelerate frequency. With motormen at both ends of a train, it can resume its journey from the terminus faster, saving approximately three minutes during rush hour. This would result in overall efficiency and punctuality of the Railways as well as reduce waiting time for commuters.

However, the Railway board can allay apprehension of job losses by training these guards to become motormen. After years of service, most guards know the basic functions of running a train. Hence, with proper training, the transition could be smooth. At present, guards on the suburban network, primarily tasked to ensure the safety of passengers, have precious little to do since the RPF is at hand to deal with the problems faced by passengers, including providing aid during an emergency. In case of grievous injuries, ambulances at the stations are pressed into service to make the most of the golden hour.

So, instead of sticking to the traditional role, 1,400 guards on Western and Central Railway can upgrade their skills to serve the people better. Lack of alternative means of transport has ensured that an overwhelming number of people depend on the trains. Though the number of rakes has gone up, it’s still insufficient for an ever-increasing population. Moreover, new tracks should have been laid but since land is scarce and prohibitively priced, acquisitions are still a far cry. The guards can do their bit in turning around the Railways.
