Fashion Bombay: Making big statements with coated goodness

Fashion Bombay | Sunday, October 2, 2011

Nail paints are small strokes that make a big statement. This fall, nail polish trends are made up of myriad options, from dark and luxurious to classy and understated. Experimental or sober, artistic or minimalist, there is something for all the ladies.

Mesmerising metallics
They add instant glam and drama to your party wear. Metallic shades should ideally be donned at night. They go perfectly with your baubles and add a finishing touch to your Little Black Dress. Current favourites are silver and teal. Metallic shades are neutral so you don’t have to worry about colour coordinating. Silver nails will highlight your sweaters, bronze shades will warm up your spring ensembles and gold will shine on the beach in the summer.

Half-moon manicures
Simply put, this is the reverse version of the French manicure. Also known as ‘moonicures’, this trend was first seen in the 1920s and has resurfaced with an absolute retro vibe. The half moon manicure adds a fun spin to the classic French manicures with all its chicness. Spend a day with your girlfriends and try your hand with this fascinating trend. All you need is a steady hand and a colourful mix of nail paints and nail art pens.

Neutral nails
Ideal to wear to work and other formal settings, the barely there nail paint trend is a safe investment to make. Select a colour that is at least two shades darker than your skin colour. This way your polish will stand out without making your finger look abnormally long. Neutral nails go with all your outfits and even allow due importance to your cocktail rings. They balance out any ensemble and suit all skin tones.

Sorbet shades
Think ice creams and macroons, soft shades of powder blues, creamy pinks and minty greens. The best thing about this trend is that it’s not limited to a certain shade. You can create a contrast with your outfits or simply match it. Try the colour blocking trend with these shades. Simply wear a different shade on your index finger and another matching colour on the others.

Neons
From bright yellows to the shocking pinks, don’t forget the fluorescent pops on your tips this fall. They breathe life into any outfit making it look preppy. The new It colour for nail polish is the bright and bold colours of neon. When wearing bright nails it is best to keep your nails short and squared off. Be funky and bold.
