Offering thanks to God teaches us one of the most valuable lessons of life — to appreciate the here and now. We learn to stop yearning for what-is-not, and enjoy what is, now.
How easy it is for us to overlook those gifts we have when we focus on those that we lack! We only diminish the value of who we are if we do not pause to be thankful. A man wished to sell his home. He went to his friend in the real estate business and asked him to help him sell the house, after describing it as well as he could. The friend wrote out an ad on the basis of what he had heard: “Beautiful 50’s house set in spacious garden,” he read. “Gabled roof, spacious verandas, well-ventilated rooms and large dining/drawing rooms. Ideally suited for families with children.” “Read that again,” said the owner. His friend obliged. “This house is not for sale,” said the man. “All my life I’ve wanted a place like this. But I never knew I had it until I heard what you have written.”
Be grateful for everything. That will give you inner strength. And you will be able to face the tumult and tempest of life with faith and fortitude.
