Detection of Crime Branch (DCB) sleuths expect to get a lot of details from Yasin Bhatkal. These include clues about those who supplied the deadly ammonium nitrate used to make the Improvised Explosive Device (IED) and sleeper cells involved in carrying out the 2008 Ahmedabad serial blasts.

The DCB sleuths believe that by interrogating the IM co-founder, they would be able to uncover many unexplored aspects of the Ahmedabad blasts, which only the Bhatkal brothers are aware of. Riyaz Bhatkal and Iqbal Bhatkal are real brothers while Yasin is their first cousin.

The DCB had already got the lead about the place from where ammonium nitrate was procured but were not able to make any substantial growth in this direction.

An officer, familiar with the investigation of the bomb blasts, told dna that it is suspected that there is more than one place from where Yasin had acquired the deadly nitrate. “He has a strong network in Bangalore and Kerala as well as a very strong hold over many youths in states like Bihar and Uttar Pradesh,” he said. The DCB believes that almost all the ammonium nitrate used in the Ahmedabad and Surat blasts were acquired by Bhatkal.

In course of the investigation, the DCB also found that Bhatkal had mobilised sleeper cells in many parts of the country, primarily to conduct the Ahmedabad blasts. “Even though the sleeper cells in Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat had been busted, there are still more details of the sleeper cells that need to be dug out of him,” a source said.

Bhatkal had stayed in places like Bangalore, Pune and Ahmedabad and visited places like Bharuch, Surat and Kerala before the Ahmedabad blasts and was in contact with many youths of these areas. “We still need to know more about his modus operandi of setting up the sleeper cell,” said the officer.
