With stronger effort Gujarat government vows to end malnutrition in six months

Pilot project will focus on 2 talukas of every district to achieve goal

In a bid to end malnutrition, the state government has decided to focus and eradicate malnutrition in two talukas of all districts in Gujarat districts. The state government is going to make video recording and photograph the process of distribution of food materials under nutrition programme.

The chief secretary in Gujarat government Dr JN Singh had convened the special meeting on subject on Saturday at his office. The officials have agreed on strict monitoring of the system to overcome the challenges that Gujarat faced against achieving good score in the sector of nutrition programme.

Dr Singh said, “State’s nutrition programme will be recorded or photos and the same will be reported to monitoring authorities. Be it the quality of the food or the number of staff on the field be will recorded.”

“Moreover, by the end of this May, Amul will send fortified food under the take home ration scheme in each and every districts of Gujarat for beneficiaries. We are targeting that within six months, two talukas in each of the districts would be 100% free from malnutrition and anaemia,” Singh added.

The government is going to take this as pilot project initially and the model will be implemented across the state soon. The officials like collectors and district development officers also will be instructed about the programme through video conference.

“Gujarat is number one state in growth rate, infrastructure and economy and now we want to improve our score in nutrition also. At present Gujarat is ranked fourth across India in nutrition level. Despite of check system, some lapses were there in implementation chain so all the districts would follow this monitoring system,” Dr Singh further added.

Talking on the issue, Vaishali Zararia, expert in the field of malnutrition who runs an NGO Sahaj in Vadodara said that focus on implementation would help government to deal with the issue. She said, “I think the food material that Gujarat government distribute among beneficiaries is best but the implementation of it needs sincere efforts.”
