Gone are the days when policing could not survive without human intelligence.
‘Mukbeer’ or informer is gradually being replaced by technology. So, recent mobile applications like WhatsApp and Truecaller and Google software are the new faceless informers of the city police.
Recently, a few cases have been detected by the Detection of Crime Branch (DCB) with the help of these applications, which otherwise would have called for help of the human intelligence.
“When we have technology available with us, why should it not be used to track down criminals as they cannot act without the help of technology,” said KP Patel, police inspector of DCB’s cybercrime cell.
Sources in the police department said earlier one had to spend days and dedicate a team of policemen to get the photograph of the suspect or accused.
Now, with the help of WhatsApp, the police are getting it while sitting in office.
A police source, who had been part of an investigating team, told dna that there are people, who make mistakes while using their electronic gadgets. “We just have to spot those mistakes,” he said.
Another policeman, who did not wish to be identified, said Truecaller had been used to identify the phone number in a few cases and once that was done, a major lead came their way. Though the case is yet to be cracked, the police have reached within striking distance of the accused.
The traditional way of mapping the house of any accused, too, has been replaced by Google Earth and maps. Before raiding a house, some tech-savvy policemen discuss the area with the help of online maps.
Earlier, a constable used to go to the house, map the area, detect the possible escape routes of the accused and raid the place accordingly.
Nowadays, it takes just a few seconds to jot out all these details through the map.
