These days, Gandhinagar traffic police are seen flashing guns of a different kind. They have been given two speed detector guns to keep a check on speed-loving car drivers and bike riders.

The device, also referred to as speed gun or radar speed gun, is used world over to measure the speed of moving vehicles. Giving details about the latest initiative, Sharad Singhal, SP- Gandhinagar, said that two speed guns have already been handed over to the traffic police.

“Earlier, we had interceptor vans. But, they require more man power and maintenance. Taking a cue from metro cities like Delhi, we decided to go for speed guns, which are more user-friendly and practical. We have trained some of our traffic staff to operate these devices,” said Singhal.
In recent times, Gandhinagar city has witnessed rise in vehicles on city roads. This has posed a challenge for the traffic police as accidents too have increased as a result of heavy traffic movement across the city. “Additionally, the roads are wide, which encourages drivers to go faster,” added Singhal.

Since there are only two speed guns available, cops will change their spots every alternate day.

“They will stand at major circles and junctions in the city and map speed of passing vehicles. If someone is found going way above the speed limit, he will be penalised,” said Singhal.

According to him, a supplementary system is also underway to catch the speeding drivers.

“Gandhinagar is a VIP area. Hence, cops need to be careful while dealing with people. They usually ask for proof of their over-speeding. Now, they will not be able to argue as we will have readings on the speed gun. Further, we will put speed limit signboards across the city, so that drivers can’t argue they do not know speed limit on that road” said Singhal.

Since the speed gun is held by a cop standing at a junction, he can’t chase the errant driver. He said, “To address this issue, separate wireless teams with vehicles will also be deployed at nearby junctions to catch the speeding vehicles based on wireless message sent by the traffic cops.”
