Navratri was a damper on Day 2 as heavy rains lashed the city and state throughout the day, resulting in water logging at most venues. Even the state government was forced to cancel its Vibrant Navratri celebrations at GMDC ground. The Tourism Corporation Gujarat Ltd (TCGL) said it was being cancelled due to 'technical reasons'.

This is perhaps the first time that the celebrations are being cancelled for a day. Two other major clubs, Rajpath and Karnavati, which had already cancelled their garba functions for two days, extended the same to the third day.

Amrish Patel, chairman of the entertainment committee of Karnavati club, said that due to the heavy rains there is severe waterlogging on the premises where the function was to be held. "It would not be possible for us to hold the function with so much water around. We have asked members to collect a refund of the fee they have paid," Patel said.

He said the club will take a decision on whether to hold the functions in the coming days depending on how the weather will be. Several other major organisers also cancelled their programmes for the day due to the rains.
Ahmedabad received 23 mm of rainfall on Monday.

Rajan Shah, secretary of Galawing in South Bopal, said due to the weather they were forced to put an end to the function for the day. "It is waterlogged. Even if we were to pump out the water, it will still be slippery and revellers run the risk of slipping on the surface. So we decided to cancel it," said Shah.

Across major cities and towns, cancellation was the norm. Unitedway Garba, one of the most popular garbas in Vadodara, also cancelled the event due to heavy rains.

Across the state, 192 talukas of 251 in the state received rains with the highest being recorded in Satlasana in Mehsana district that got 179 mm of rainfall.

Meanwhile, the Met department has warned of moderate thundershowers in the coming days for Gujarat. In fact, the rains are likely to let up only after October 2. A total of 114 dams in the state are overflowing while water level at Sardar Sarovar dam is 98% of its total storage capacity. Meanwhile, the government will soon be carrying out a survey for loss of crops in talukas that received over 100% of their annual average rainfall.
