The city woke up to a heavy downpour on Saturday but the pleasant weather thereafter didn’t dampen spirits. Amdavadis were seen enjoying the intermittent rain throughout the day, albeit sometimes wading in knee-deep waters that resulted from rain between 2am and 8am.

Ahmedabad on Saturday recorded an average of 47.66mm rainfall with the highest (62.67mm) being recorded in the south zone of the city. Four underpasses – Akhbarnagar, Mithakali, Parimal and Daxini – were shut to traffic but barring Akhbarnagar and Daxini, the others were opened later in the day.

The heavy rains uprooted nine trees and caused two cave-ins – one each in Vejalpur and Usmanpura – in the city. Ten gates of the Vasna Barrage were also opened.

There were reports that villages in the outskirts of Ahmedabad were put on high alert. Gujarat State Disaster Management Authority (GSDMA) couldn’t be contacted to confirm the reports.

Gujarat, however, had a relatively dry Saturday. Surat, Vadodara, Bharuch, Narmada, Saurashtra and North Gujarat did receive heavy rains but after a relatively dry afternoon, water levels receded in many places. Bharuch, which had been put on alert on Friday, got a respite from the rains on Saturday.

“Rain has stopped but water is receding at a slow pace, and hence, the alert continues,” said Avantika Singh Aulakh, collector of Bharuch district. Aulakh said that 4,000 people have been evacuated from low-lying areas of the city, its outskirts, Ankleshwar and Jhagadia. Almost all districts of Gujarat received rain but most recorded less than two inches rainfall.
