Vibrant Gujarat Summit: India-specific size for textiles soon, says Smriti Irani

Textile minister also assured to resolve RoSL on embedded tax issues

Soon the Indian apparel market may have the Size India that could fit to body measurement of Indian population. The union textile minister Smriti Irani made this announcement on Sunday speaking at the Textile Conclave during Vibrant Gujarat Summit 2009. She told that the systematic study of consumer market in india would begin soon. The players of textile industries attended this seminar in presence of Gujarat chief minister Vijay Rupani.

Speaking to the gathering at the conclave, Irani said, "In our nation, never before a study was done to ascertain the strength and magnitude of our domestic market. Mr. Chief minister, I hereby present the resolve that Government of India will soon embark upon a statistical study to actually categorise entire domestic demand of Indian market, so that it becomes base for policy creation and to further strengthen industry manufacturing possiblities. UK has size, US and Europe has size in measure but India does not. And I hereby soon a Size India project will be rolled out for the first of its time in Indian history."

The union minister also said that 207 items had been included in HSN code to leverage the growth of the Indian textile market driven by technologies. She also added that the union government under the leadership of PM Narendra Modi was poised to make some good announcement over taxes on exports for the industry in days to come.

"I would address the people sitting in first two row, from textile industry in Surat and Ahmedabad, what will you do about RoSL and Embedded taxes? Let me articulate commitment of Government of India that it is resolved by the PM and finance minister that taxes are not to be export and we are under that resolution, ensuring you will have good news very soon," Irani further added.

Gujarat chief minister Vijay Rupani said, "Textile is the industry that serves in the range from turban to urban. I mean to say that the consumer base of this industry lies in rural and urban sectors both. Textile sector in Gujarat needs to grow on base of modernization and therefore we have recently made announcement of several schemes."

The players from industries like BK Goyanka from Welspun Group, Kuleen Lalbhai from Arvind Group, and others spoke on the issue.
