Vibrant Gujarat Summit: Canada seeks investment in high tech sectors

Canada is seeking investment from India in high tech sector, a top Canadian government official said here recently. The North Americancountry is looking at diversifying its trade beyond its trade with USA.

"We have invested $ 950 million across our five super clusters. Thegovernment is providing enough incentives to private companies, bothlocal and foreign," said Annie Dube, Consul General of Canada atMumbai in India. She was talking to DNA during her participation in Vibrant Gujarat Summit 2019 held in Gandhinagar. 

The five superclusters include digital technology cluster along the West Cost,Protein Industries in Prairies, advance manufacturing cluster inToronto, cluster for Artificial Intelligence in Montreal and the oceantechnology cluster along the East Cost. Inspite of being endowed withnatural resources, Canada is focussing on investment in futuristictechnologies to take its existing sectors to a new level.It is looking to diversify its trade relations beyond its immediateneighbour USA, as a part of which it had recently renamed its Ministryof Trade as Ministry of Trade Diversification. It is also hopeful thatits negotiations with India on Free Trade Agreement (FTA) will see thelight of the day.Ahmedabad-based IT entrepreneur Jaimin Shah, who has set up hiscompany Dev Infotech North America Ltd said that doing business,especially for SMEs, is easy in Canada as one can start operations inabout 10 days. 

"Local government also gives incentives if you hirelocal talent, especially unskilled ones. The tax system is digitalwith virtually no interference from officials. Moreover, it acts as agateway to entire North American market," said Shah, a member ofnational council of Indo Canadian Chamber of Commerce (ICBC). He hasbusiness centres in Toronto and Prince Edward Island.
