Dharasana – a small coastal village 40 km south of Dandi near Valsad town – is all set to become a tourist destination. The district administration has decided to develop tourist amenities near the Dharasana memorial.

Dharasana was an important landmark during the Salt Satyagraha by Mahatma Gandhi and along with Dandi (Navsari). Dharasana also played an important role in the movement.

The district administration said the amenities will be developed in a phased manner. In phase I, the district administration will develop a prayer hall, exhibition centre and other facilities at the site (sitting arrangements, toilet blocks, drinking water and others). A board displaying the history of Dharasana will also be placed near the memorial as an attraction for the tourists.

Phase 2 will see development of a museum, a large hall (for holding seminars, discussions and cultural programmes), and a historical centre. In phase III, the initial plans include development of Ahimsa (non-violence) university and a vocational training centre.

“Through these initiatives, people will know more about Dharasna’s role in the Salt Satyagraha and its contribution to Indian history. If certain amenities are created, then the place can become a viable tourist spot. Besides, such development will also boost the local economy,” said district collector of Valsad Vikrant Pandey.

The district administration has identified a space for the developing amenities. While local villagers have donated land and also contributed monetary support for the project, the district administration will also use its grants.

Some of the earmarked projects will be developed on a public-private partnership (PPP) basis.

“Tenders for projects under phase I have already been floated and the work is expected to begin soon,” added Pandey.

After Mahatma Gandhi challenged the British government’s salt law at Dandi in Navsari district, the revolutionists marched towards Dharasana village, which is famous for salt production. Since Gandhiji had already been arrested in Karadi village, Abbas Tayabji, Sarojni Naidu and other freedom fighters continued their march to Dharasana. Despite a crackdown by the British, in which some protestors lost their lives, satyagrahis were successful in breaking the salt law.

A memorial was later created at the spot to remember the heroic act of the revolutionaries by the then district administration in 1930.
