Dalits and tribals in Gujarat have sought full utilisation of the Budget allocated for them, as well as removal of objectionable references in government gazettes about certain castes, failing which they will soon launch an agitation. Tuesday onwards, they will approach all Dalit and Tribal MLAs of BJP to seek their support that the budgeted grants are fully utilised.

Bharatiya Bahujan Hitay Sangh, a body representing the dalits, said on Monday that hardly 50 per cent of the grant amount allocated by the state and central governments for SC-ST Sub Plan is being spent on their welfare. "It is found that these funds are utilised for other purposes. As a result, dalits and tribals are deprived of the funds they are entitled to," said a letter written by the Sangh to the Governor and Chief Minister of the state. They submitted the memorandum of their demands to the collector of Navsari district.

Sangh also mentioned in the letter that recent government gazettes had mentioned certain categories of SC and ST in a derogatory manner, and all such references should be removed at the earliest. Paresh Chauhan, one of the leaders of Sangh said that if their demands are not met, then they will be forced to conduct an agitation.

Meanwhile, Tuesday onwards dalits and tribals of the state under the aegis of Navsarjan, a voluntary organisation based out of Ahmedabad, will be approaching all dalit and tribal MLAs of ruling BJP in the state to press for total utilisation of the Budget allocated for them.

Kirit Rathod of Navsarjan said that they have been approaching all dalit and tribal MLAs of the state and so far only Congress MLAs have agreed to support them. "Tuesday onwards, we will be meeting dalit MLAs from BJP from Ahmedabad city. We will be meeting Pradeep Parmar representing Asarwa constituency," said Rathod.
