Urdu medium students in Gujarat preparing for board exams are in a panicky mode already. With the Gujarat board releasing the board exam paper in Gujarati and not in Urdu, students fear losing out on time while translating the same in Urdu. Schools in the city are walking an extra mile to ensure that students learn jargons of Gujarati, to avoid wasting time during the exams.

Worried for her daughter, Rafat Shaikh, mother of a class 11 student of FD High School says, "My daughter suffered in class 10 as she made mistakes since she could not understand the question. While they can understand and speak in Gujarati, but they find it difficult to understand some word. We do not understand the intention of the state government."

Anisha Shaikh, Principal, FD School for Girls in Jamalpur said, "Number of times, we approached the state government expressing our concerns. But all in vain. Hence, we are training our students in Gujarati jargons this time so that they get better equipped and do not panic when they get the question paper. Because they take time to understand the question, they panic. The quality of results of Urdu medium as against previous years has been affected due to this. Not just Urdu, board papers are now asked only in three languages that include Hindi, English and Gujarati."

"On one hand, they say Beti padhao but do they make the environment comfortable for our girls to study? This way, no parents would want to send their children to Urdu medium schools and opt for Gujarati medium schools", said Rafat.

When DNA spoke to the students who will be appearing for boards, they said that they are very apprehensive to appear for exams as their worry is a translation. "As we get the question paper, we first translate it into Urdu and then answer. All of this process takes a lot of time and we often wrongly answer the questions and lose marks."

Taking note of the situation, state education minister Bhupendrasinh Chudasama said, "I have not received a single complaint. I invite students and schools to express their concerns to my department."

A highly placed official shared, "There has been a drop in a number of students of regional languages hence it is not possible for us to bring out papers in so many languages. It also leads to leaking of the paper. This was the main reason that the state government decided to bring out papers only in three languages."
