Lord Bhikhu Parekh, member of UK's House of Lords, said that Uniform Civil Code (UCC) can ensure gender equality and enhance national integrity.

While addressing the students of GLS Law college on Saturday during their foundation ceremony on 'Legal pluralism and cultural diversity', Parekh said that culture has a great influence not only on our daily lives but also over the legal system of our country.

"Culture is important as it gives us moral basis and values. Altogether, we have plural legal system. We have a right to culture under the Constitution which includes right to personal laws. But it creates problems as marriage, adoption, inheritance etc. are dealt differently under different personal laws," said Parekh, adding that UCC can provide solutions for several problems as such.

GLS Law college celebrated its 4th foundation day in the presence of Sudhir Nanavati, Executive Vice President of Gujarat Law Society; Himanshu Pandya, Vice Chancellor, Gujarat University and Salman Chishty, Chairman, Chishty Foundation, Ajmer apart from Parekh.

Sharing some ideas to solve culture related issues, Parekh said, "Constitutional amendment should be made that all personal laws shall be subject to the principles of gender equality. Personal laws which are consistent with Constitutional Provision may remain in force."

"The UCC should be made applicable area by area gradually, and not at once. The state should try to develop a Common Civil Culture and good ideas; or principles of various personal laws should be incorporated in Uniform Civil Code," he added.
