It seems that the Ahmedabad civic body is promoting usage of two-wheelers by allotting their owners space to park their vehicles free of cost on the street. The standing committee chairman Amul Bhatt, on Thursday, announced that two-wheeler and autorickshaw owners will not be charged.

"The standing committee has decided to allow on-street parking. There will be three categories of on-street parking and charges accordingly. There will be A,B and C category roads for the parking space. However, charges will be levied from the cars only," said Amul Bhatt, chairman, a standing committee of Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC).

"Two-wheelers and autorickshaw will be exempted from the parking charges while parking on-street allotted parking space," added Bhatt. The three categories will be decided as per the heritage, commercial and usage value of the road. There will be the same rate for all the parking space.

AMC to survey street vendors

The standing committee on Thursday also announced survey for street vendors in city limit. The authority have received complaints and requests from the vendors regarding space for business. The civic body is planning to set up vendor streets in each zone after demolishing several structures and implementing Town Planning scheme for upcoming six-lane SG Highway.

"Each zone will have dedicated space for the vendors. We are going to do a survey of the street vendors. We are also considering to do this survey with help of an external agency," said Amul Bhatt, standing committee chairman.

It is to be noted that during Bhadra Plaza redevelopment, AMC had given the contract for the survey to CEPT university and had many blunders. The CEPT report stated that around 1500 vendors, almost double than the actual. Vendors have filed a court case against AMC for this matter.

They will be finalising the survey and allot space by August 31. "We are working on making a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for the street vendors. We are going to allot a vendors zone into limited spaces," added Bhatt.
