The Civil Hospital recently dealt with two very rare cases of spinal abnormalities involving a 25-year-old and a 16-year-old, and successfully provided respite to both patients.

Devilal (25) from Rajasthan, was afflicted by a rare condition known as Ankylosing Spondylitis which led to his spine being rigid and bent while Subham (16) from Rajkot had Syringomyelia, a condition which leads to cysts developing on the spine.

According to doctors at the Civil Hospital, Devilal's surgery was very complex as his spine was bent at an angle of nearly 90 degrees. The operation went on for five hours under the observation of neurologists and a team of experts including hospital superintendent Dr MM Prabhakar.

"The patient had ground-gaze vision, due to a bent back. It's a very rare and complex operation, and it took five hours to perform the surgery. Thankfully, we have fixed the problem. He would need another hip surgery to walk properly after some time. We've done his treatment free of cost," said Dr Prabhakar.

Both Devilal and Subham were suffering from Kyphoscoliosis, where the body structure is affected due to abnormal curvature of the vertebral column. The doctors said that only 3% people across the globe develop such a deformity owing to various reasons.

Before reaching the Civil Hospital, Devilal had been running pillar to post in Rajasthan for his treatment. "We visited many hospitals in Rajasthan, in many cities, but didn't get a proper response. Some doctors said that they could try the surgery but it would cost Rs 5-10 lakh. After a lot of struggle, we came to Gujarat in May. After some check-ups, the doctors scheduled the surgery for June. I can walk normally now," said Devilal.

In the case of Subham, he had developed Syringomyelia playing tennis. After that, he developed the spinal deformity. "Because of the abnormality, I was bullied. I was withdrawn and didn't like to meet people. Now, after the operation, I feel much better," said Subham.
