The two-day bird census at Nalsarovar and Thol is all set to begin on Friday. The census will see around 150 birdwatchers and volunteers apart from around 30 to 50 forest department officials taking part.

The bird census, a biennial event at Nalsarovar and Thol have been conducted with regularity since 1992. "Every year we try to improvise to ensure that the census is better than the previous year. In fact, it should not even be called a census as it is in reality a population estimation of the birds," said Uday Vora, Chief Conservator of Forest (CCF) and technical coordinator for the census.

Vora, a veteran of the bird census and an avid bird watcher himself said this time around they have tried to ensure that the demarcation of zones is better. "We will also be providing the volunteers with the GPS location wherever possible so as to ensure that they don't end up being in the location of other groups. We have also set up markers to ensure that areas are clearly demarcated," said Vora. He said that while all the volunteers will have binoculars this time they are also trying to make use of telescopes. "This time we may use more telescopes as species identification can sometimes be very difficult if the lighting is not good," said Vora.

The census every year attracts several bird watchers and even amateurs. The census this year will have students from MSU and Bhavnagar university as well. The census apart from Nalsarovar, a Ramsar Site and Thol will also cover Wadla and Bhaskarpura which is 20 to 35 km from Nalsarovar. "Birds at Wadla and Bhaskarpura will also be counted as part of the census. This is the third time that the two places are being made part of the census," said Vora.

The chief co-ordinator of the census is Mahesh Singh, CCF Wildlife Gandhinagar. It should be noted that due to the census, the sanctuary is closed for visitors.
