Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to launch the service to transport passengers for the Roll on-Roll off (Ro-Ro) ferry service in May between Dahej and Ghogha in Gujarat. The Prime Minister had earlier launched the initial phase of this service ferrying passengers only in October last year before the assembly polls and had traveled from Ghogha to Dahej with the differently abled Divyang kids. Now the official launch of the Ro-Ro service is almost set, said the union minister of state for ports Mansukh Mandaviya here while addressing a press conference.

Mandaviya, talking to reporters said, "The purchase of vessel for the Ro-Ro service between Dahej and Ghogha is complete and by next month it will come under use. I am trying at my best that PM Modi inaugurates the full fledged service. This will allow the transport vehicles and passengers to commute together between these two places in state."

"The work of construction at the jetties was to be finished and link span also were to be installed. Entire construction work is finished and now the service will start after the trial which will be carried out soon," the minister added. This ro-ro ferry will have the capacity to carry over 100 vehicles (cars, buses and trucks) and 250 passengers between Ghogha in Bhavnagar district of Saurashtra and Dahej in Bharuch district.

The overall project cost of Rs 614 crore has been funded partly by the state government. It will reduce the current travel time between Ghogha and Dahej from over eight hours to a flat one hour, thus reducing the distance between the two ports from over 360 km to 31 km.

The minister who also holds portfolio of transport, chemicals, fertilisers and petrochemicals said, "National Highway Authority has given in principal sanction to take over the operations of 3000km state highways across Gujarat. We have been putting emphasis over building rail, road and port infrastructure near Dahej where PCPIR is located." The minister claimed that the PCPIR received investments of Rs. 25,000 crore and gave direct jobs to 36,000 people from nearby.
