The CID (Crime), which is investigating the bitcoin extortion and kidnapping case, said on Sunday that no remote transfer of bitcoins was made by the accused while they were lodged in jail in the state.

The clarification comes after a local daily reported about how bitcoins, worth Rs 6 crore, were transferred by some of the accused while they were in jail. The report alleged that the transfer took place after the accused changed the password and the wallet identity while they were in jail.

Speaking at a press conference in Gandhinagar, DIG CID (Crime) Dipankar Trivedi said transferring of bitcoins wouldn’t be possible without a smartphone or laptop and s well as an internet connection. “Neither a smartphone, nor a laptop, or internet is within the access of any prisoner in any jail. So, the question of transferring bitcoins while in jail does not arise,” said Trivedi.

The cops also clarified that whatever bitcoins were recovered or confiscated during the investigation had been transferred to the ZEBPAY wallet of the CID crime.

“The cops used the login of the accused and through their email id got a verification code and opened the wallet of the accused to transferred the confiscated bitcoins to CID crime’s wallet,” a release from the cops said.

The release also clarified that in the remand application of the CID crime on June 1, 2018 , the investigating agency had stated that this was for the first time that a probe was being held into cryptocurrencies and hence they needed the help of forensic experts to understand the crime.

In the remand application the investigating agency while emphasising why they needed to have custody of the accused had stated that if they were not in custody they could carry out parallel transactions while investigations were on.  In the application, the investigating agency had also said that it was finding it difficult to recover 119 bitcoin worth Rs 6 crore due to a mail sent from a remote address by someone.

The release said that a ‘misunderstanding’ about what the investigating agency had stated in the remand application had lead to a belief that bitcoins were transferred by the accused while they were in jail.
