Tourists in state up from 6 lakh to 2.5 crore in seven years

The last day of the 106th Travel and Tourism Fair (TTF), held in the city, witnessed travel enthusiasts thronging to the venue on Sunday. More than 400 participants from across the country as well as seven other countries brought special offers and packages for Amdavadis. During the valedictory function on Sunday, chairman of Tourism Corporation of Gujarat Ltd, Kamlesh Patel talked about increase in number of tourists in the state over the years.

“The state had received 6 lakh tourists in 2006-07, which increased to a whopping 2.54 crore in 2012-13,” said Patel. He added that the state has spent Rs1,200 crore for development of beaches, religious places and tourism places.

The last day also witnessed a special awards ceremony to honour the exhibitors in various categories. The award for ‘most promising new destination’ was bagged by Manipur and Andaman & Nicobar tourism. Other awards in categories like Best Decoration, Best Value Leisure Destination’ were also given away.

This year, the new entrants for TTF 2013 were Malaysia, Thailand and Nepal. The three-day tourism event served as a single place to showcase destinations, tourism packages and travel products to help people plan their holidays. Tourism boards, hotels, resorts, travel agents, tour operators, online travel agencies, railways, cruise lines were present at the event.
