SURAT :Horticulture and book fair from today
Annual horticulture and book fair of Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) will begin today at Vanita Vishram Grounds, Athwalines. Famous columnist and writer, Jay Vasavada, will inaugurate the fair, which will end on February 28. Apart from flowers and plants, the horticulture section will have books for all ages. A handicraft fair has also been planned as an added attraction

PATAN :25-yr-old raped in Chandruman
A 25-year-old woman was raped by one Bhavanji Kanaji Thakore in Chandruman village of Patan. The incident happened when the victim was returning home after giving food to her husband at their farm. Thakore apprehended her, took her to a nearby field and raped her. He threatened to kill her if she informed anyone about the incident.

MANDVI :Fisherman killed in freak mishap 
Mangled remains of a fisherman were found in his boat at Mandvi, Kutch on Thursday. As per information available, Mahmad Dawood Lakhan (40) was out at sea and suddenly, water started gushing into his boat. He tried to pump the water out but unfortunately, his scarf got stuck in the machine and he was dragged into it. The impact was such that the head was severed from the body.

SURAT :Debts claim another life
Ashok Magan Ode, 22, committed suicide by plunging into Tapi River from Magdalla Bridge of the diamond city. As per police, Ode had massive debts on his head but couldn’t repay them. It is believed that he took the extreme step troubled by his financial condition.

ANAND :MLA’s car in expressway pile-up  
BJP MLA Dilip Patel’s car was involved in a pile-up on A’bad-Vadodara Expressway late night on Wednesday. The politician escaped with minor injuries in the incident. Patel was returning after attending the budget session in Gandhinagar.

DHANERA :Four killed in road mishap 
Four people were killed near Dhanera, Mehsana in a collision involving a state transport bus and a jeep. Eight others were injured who are now recuperating in a government hospital in Dhanera. Farmers near the accident site provided necessary first-aid.

JAMNAGAR :Gynaecologist caught for sex determination
A gynaecologist was pulled up by district health department after she was caught red-handed performing a sex determination test in her clinic in Jamnagar. The department took action after a complaint was lodged against her, after which the officials raided her health centre.

A prisoner was caught with a cellphone in Palara Jail, Bhuj. The device was found near the bathroom of the jail. It is believed that another prisoner, Ali Mahmad Sama had smuggled it in. An inquiry has been commissioned in the matter. In fact, this incident led to another as another prisoner was caught hiding a cellphone in his underclothes.

RAJKOT :Formula cost student dear
A professor of Arpit College, Rajkot beat up Kishan Vashram Chandrala with a PVC pipe. The professor lost his cool when Chandrala failed to remember a particular formula. Chandrala was rushed to hospital was rushed to hospital in 108 Ambulance. Student unions have intimated college trustees about the incident who assured to take action against the professor.

BHAVNAGAR : Another temple targetted
In yet another temple theft, thieves on Thursday targetted 200-year-old Dadasaheb Jain Derasar and made away with cash from the donation box. The trunk was kept in Lord Chintamani Parsvanath Pandal. No CCTV footage is available as the thieves were smart enough to turn them to ‘look’ the other side. Convenor of the organisation, Sanjay Shah, has lodged a police complaint, though there is no estimate of the booty siphoned.
