Facing threat from private players in Ahmedabad, one of the oldest university in the state of Gujarat is eyeing to add new colleges. Seventy-year-old Gujarat University is all set to add new colleges despite facing wrath from various students associations in the city.

The ‘Need’ committee of the university as per the norms of Universities Grants Commission (UGC) has recommended the university to start new colleges. However, the National Students Union of India (NSUI) has alleged that while many seats go vacant in various courses, the university on other hand is adding colleges.

Snubbing the claim, Digvijaysinh Gohil, syndicate member said, “The process of permission is going on but no single college has been given permission. Permission means the college can admit students. After 2015, no single college has been given permission to start. In the recent executive council meeting, we have accepted the report submitted by the local inquiry committee that has college wise stated colleges that lack infrastructure or other facilities. The university has sent the letter of inspection to the colleges to fulfil those requirements only then permission can be granted.”

He added, “Also, to survive amidst private universities like GLS university, Ahmeda-bad University and others, we need to add good colleges to not lose out on students.”

Commenting on the issue, Himanshu Pandya, Vice-chancellor, Gujarat University said, “Most colleges affiliated to university are running extar divisions and in some cases upto 8 divisions. This impacts the quality of teaching as well. University is already compromising a lot. We are surrounded by private universities like Nirma university, GLS and Ahmedabad university. In order to remain contemporary, we need to evolve ourselves with the system and hence we invite good players for the same.”

Among those who have applied include JG Science college, Khyati Foundation, CU Shah, Kameshwar Science college, etc. Highly placed sources said, “The report of the inspection committee is very interesting. For JG college, they are already running 7 colleges in one building and do not have 2 acres of land. In any case, they cannot be given permission for the new college. For Gyandhara education trust, the report said that they are not intending for the betterment of education. Khyati institute falls inside army cantonment and is reserved for children of army officials and they want to start physiotherapy college.
