Thunder-struck Amdavad to get some more rain

Heavy to very heavy rain expected in S'rashtra, parts of other regions in next 12 hrs.

The city woke up to another day of heavy rainfall and lightning, recording 12 mm of rain between 7 am and 11 am. All parts of the city received heavy downpour accompanied by thunder and lightning that eventually led to waterlogging. The highest rainfall, over 27 mm, was recorded in the central zone.

In fact, the heavy thundershower in this zone happened between 10 am and 4 pm. Overall, the city recorded 1.05 inches (26.56 mm) of rain. Six incidents of trees being uprooted were reported from the city. An equal number of cave-ins was also reported.

“It was another day of wading through water-logged roads for me. Waterlogging only adds to traffic jam during peak office hours,” said Hema Iyer, a professional working in a design company.

“I had to wait for almost an hour before I could get an autorickshaw. I had to pay double as the auto drivers took a longer route to avoid waterlogging,” said Anita Mukundan, a resident of Satellite.

The Met department has predicted a few spells of rain or thundershowers in the city while there are warnings of heavy to very heavy rainfall in the next 12 hours at some parts of Gujarat and whole of Saurashtra. In all, there is prediction of heavy to moderate rainfall for almost all the districts of the state for Friday.

In Saurashtra, scattered but heavy rainfall was recorded in the last 24 hours in Jamnagar, Surendranagar and Junagadh district. Talala area in Gir continued to receive heavy rain as another 30 to 100 mm of rainfall was recorded in the area. Junagadh city received 125 mm of rain while Maliya, Hatina and Keshod got 75 mm. All the talukas in Junagadh district received rain between 25 and 50 mm.

Balambhdi area in Jamnagar district received 170 mm rain between Wednesday and Thursday. Due to the downpour, most of the rivers and check dams in the area were flowing to full capacity. Kalavad received 40 mm while Jam Jodhpur got 20 mm.

In Surendranagar district, widespread rainfall between 25 and 75 mm was recorded in all talukas. Surendranagar city recorded 75 mm rain during Thursday while Halvad, Limbdi and Chotila received 25 to 45 mm of rain.

Due to heavy rain in the catchment area of Tapi, inflow in Ukai dam touched 2 lakh cusecs on Thursday. Dam authorities continued to discharge water. Twelve gates of the dam were opened by seven feet to maintain the rule level. Outflow was maintained at 1.49 lakh cusecs.  At 8 pm, the water level at the dam was recorded at 331.60 feet.

South Gujarat region also recorded showers on Thursday. Surat city recorded 10 mm of rain. Bardoli taluka of Surat district recorded maximum 40 mm while Umarpada taluka recorded 32 mm. Mahuva, Mandvi and Mangrol talukas recorded 18 mm, 20 mm and 13 mm respectively. Olpad and Palsana talukas registered 9 mm and 13 mm of rain.
Meanwhile, Kamrej and Choryasi recorded 31 mm and 28 mm respectively.

Other districts of South Gujarat region too received showers Thursday. On an average, Navsari district recorded 16 mm, while Valsad district recorded 22 mm rain. Dangs and Tapi district recorded 18 mm and 11 mm rain on Thursday.
