Textile traders in Ahmedabad will take out a rally on Saturday to protest against the imposition of Goods and Services Tax (GST) on fabric.

Meanwhile, leaders from Surat’s textile committee who were supposed to participate in the rally, won’t be able to do so as they would be meeting for negotiating with the officials of central government in Delhi on Saturday.

Meanwhile, textile markets in Surat observed a bandh on Friday amidst sporadic efforts to open the shops. Trade leaders blame vested interests in political and trading community for these events.

Close to 50,000 traders in textile sector are participating in the protest to exempt fabric from GST. They are on an indefinite bandh since the imposition of GST on July 1. A bandh was also planned on Wednesday but deferred as a mark of condolence for those killed in the Amarnath terror attack.

“Government is trying to stop the protest but small traders are determined that they be kept out of GST regime,” said Gaurang Bhagat, president of Maskati Mahajan and one of the key leaders in the textile sector in Ahmedabad.

Tarachand Kasat, president of All India Textile GST Sangharsh Samiti said a delegation from Surat is having talks with officials of central government on Saturday and so they will not be able to attend the rally in Ahmedabad.
