Tar balls, allegedly caused due to suspected oil spill in the seas, have spread to more areas of Valsad district, officials said on Monday.

DNA had reported on Sunday that tar balls had been found on the beaches of Umargam, Nargol and Tithal. The tar balls were seen in about 20-km area on Saturday. However, the area expanded to 40-km on Monday, said environmental activist MSH Sheikh.

A senior official said that the tar balls had been spotted on beaches in neighbouring Daman, and there were chances of it also spreading further to coastal parts of north Maharashtra. Valsad collector CR Kharsan said that Gujarat Pollution Control Board (GPCB) had collected samples of the tar balls from the beaches, and sent them for testing.

BR Gajjar, regional officer of GPCB, Vapi, said that the tar balls had been found at more places in Valsad, but they were covering only scattered places and not the entire stretch.

"Tar balls can be formed for many reasons, and not necessarily because of oil spill only," Gajjar said, adding that more clarity would emerge when test results of the samples are available in a few days.

KC Mistry, member secretary of GPCB, said that they were keeping a close eye on the situation. "Our teams are working with the local administration as per the disaster management plan," Mistry said. He, however, added that tar balls along the coastline was almost an annual phenomenon in south Gujarat region during monsoon.
