Swine flu claims four more in Gujarat

The state health department said that one seasonal flu (swine flu) patient each in Banaskantha, Amreli, Gir Somnath, and Jamnagar, succumbed on Saturday.

The swine flu situation in the state continues to become increasingly worried with 3-4 deaths being reported on almost a daily basis, and several more cases coming to light. On Saturday, four more swine flu deaths were reported in the state, while 44 more cases were confirmed.

The state health department said that one seasonal flu (swine flu) patient each in Banaskantha, Amreli, Gir Somnath, and Jamnagar, succumbed on Saturday. With this, the total number of deaths because of swine flu in the state since January 1 has gone up to 38.

What is worrying is that of these, 30 swine flu patients succumbed in the last ten days. As of January 22, the number of swine flu deaths in the state was eight, which is now at 38. The health department said that 44 new swine flu cases were reported in the state on Saturday, taking the total number of cases in the current year to 781. The number of swineflu cases in the state has also shot up in the last few days.

An average of 40 swine flu cases are being reported in the state on a daily basis for the past few days. As of January 22, the number of cases was 397, which is now nearing 800.

Of the 44 cases that were reported today, 14 were from Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) limits alone. Five cases were reported in Surat city, and four each in Vadodara city, and Junagadh. Three cases were reported in Kutch, and two in Bhavnagar district.

The health department said that Gandhinagar city, Gandhinagar district, Bhavnagar city, Rajkot, Banaskantha, Anand, Amreli, Mehsana, Patan, Surendranagar, Porbandar, and Kheda reported one swine flu case each. According to officials, of the 781 swine flu cases that have been confirmed so far, 444 patients have recovered, and 299 are undergoing treatment.

How it spreads and can be prevented

Swine flu is a contagious disease and can spread from person to person, inhaled droplets from coughing & sneezing, and droplets on hands & surface. Its symptoms are fever, cough, sore throat, body ache, and breathlessness.

Pregnant women, infants, old people, the ill, those having immune deficient conditions, and those on long term medication are more on risk.

Preventive measures include covering the nose and mouth while sneezing and coughing, washing hands regularly, avoiding touching eyes, nose or mouth, drinking plenty of fluids, avoiding self-medication, among others.
