Swine flu continues to take a heavy toll in Gujarat. The state reported 10 more deaths and 201 new cases of swine flu on Friday, even as the state government claimed that the number of cases has declined.

With this, the total number of swine flu cases in the state has crossed 4,000 this year.

"With 4,062 confirmed swine flu cases since January 1, Gujarat has reported the second highest number of cases after Maharashtra, where the number is around 4,500," said an official. Ten more swine flu patients lost their lives in the last 24 hours, taking the toll of the year to 316. The state government said in a press release that the number of new cases has declined, while number of patients recuperating has been on the rise.

"As against 201 new cases, 315 patients have recovered and gone home. Even on Thursday, 307 patients were discharged as against 221 new cases. A total of 1,275 patients have been discharged in the past week," the press release stated.

However, the press release did not mention the number of patients still in the hospital. Sources said that the number of swine flu patients undergoing treatment, as of Friday, was 1,379. State CM Vijay Rupani had visited a special swine flu ward at Rajkot Civil Hospital last week to take stock of the situation.
