In a major milestone, Surat, which tops in organ donation in the state, recorded its 100th liver donation on Monday. The liver and other organs of Pravin Khunt, 45, a supervisor in a weaving unit in Kim, were donated by his family.

Khunt had met with an accident on April 13 in which he sustained severe head injuries that led to brain hemorrhage. Khunt was declared brain-dead by doctors on Monday.

Donate Life, which works for organ donation, spoke with Khunt's family and convinced them to donate his vital organs.

The organisation said one of Khunt's kidneys was transplanted into Daksha Vaghela, 36, of Godhra, and another into Kheda resident Lalji Thakor, 38. His liver was given to 50-year-old Rajkot resident Arvind Parmar at the Institute of Kidney Diseases and Research Centre. His eyes were donated to the Lokdrashti Eye Bank.

Nilesh Mandlewala of Donate Life said they had been donated 247 kidneys, 100 livers, six pancreases, seven hearts, and 210 pairs of eyes, giving a fresh lease of life to 577 people.

Out of total 180 cadaver organ donations in the state in 2017, Surat accounted for 91, followed by Ahmedabad with 28. The Diamond City accounted for 52 out of 106 cadaver kidney donations, while Ahmedabad had 15. It also had 28 out of 62 liver donations.
