The Ahmedabad Crime Branch, on Friday, arrested Harshsai Gurjar, a resident of Surat from Rajasthan in the case of the 11-year-old girl's rape and murder. The cops had detained two other men, Ram Naresh (a neighbour of Gurjar) and Hari Gurjar (Harshsai's brother) on Thursday night in Surat.

The investigation revealed that the accused, a construction contractor, had bought a mother and daughter from Gangapur for bonded labour. The mother of the girl had been missing from March 20 and police suspect the accused had killed her as well.

Rajdeep Zala, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime Branch) said, "More than 300 CCTV footages were recovered by police for investigation, in which, a suspicious car was found near the crime scene. With the help of technical staff, the owner of the car was found and detained."

The car owner was identified as Ram Naresh, a resident of Surat. During interrogation, he revealed that the car belonged to him, but on April 6, he had lent it to his neighbour Harshsai Gurjar, who is also his landlord Hari Gurjar's brother.

Further investigation revealed that a couple of months back, Harshsai Gurjar had bought a mother and daughter from Gangapur of Rajasthan for Rs 35,000 as bonded labourers. The mother had gone missing on March 20 and when her disappearance was noticed, Gurjar told people she had run away with someone. He said he would take care of the daughter and took her with him. He then tortured her for seven days before strangling her to death on April 5 night. Later, he borrowed Naresh's car and dumped the child's body near Pandesara. On April 9, Surat police found a badly decomposed body of an unidentified woman 200 metres from the spot where the girl's body had been recovered. Locals identified the body as that of the mother. The cops sent her DNA samples to the FSL.

On April 16, fearing capture by police, Harshsai fled to Rajasthan with his family.

At around 4.30pm on Friday, Pradipsinh Jadeja, Home Minister of State, conducted a press conference at the BJP office in Gandhinagar, during which he congratulated Gujarat police on cracking the sensitive case. He also stated that, "A team of around 400 policemen were deployed in the case, which included the Crime Branch, Surat police, etc. With the help of technical force, mobile data and CCTV footage, the movement of the car and accused were traced and they were nabbed."

Vijay Rupani, Chief Minister of Gujarat, also congratulated Surat police for arresting the culprits behind the brutal act.

Jitu Vaghani, state BJP President, said, "The state of Gujarat took the issue very seriously. I congratulate the police and other state machinery for apprehending the culprit."
